How do you calculate a dog’s age in human years?
For years people said one dog year equals seven human years. That is a myth: dogs age very fast at first and more slowly later. A University of California San Diego study (2020) compared dog and human DNA and proposed a formula: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31.

Dog age questions.
Is one dog year really seven human years?
No, it is a myth. A one-year-old dog is roughly like a teenager, and then ages more slowly. The University of California San Diego formula uses a logarithm to reflect that.
At what age is a dog a senior?
It depends on size: large dogs can be considered senior from 6 or 7 years, small dogs from 9 or 10. Your vet can advise for your dog.
Does the calculator work for mixed-breed dogs?
Yes, as a guide. The exact figure depends on breed, size and health.
