How much food does a dog need?
First we calculate resting energy with the formula 70 × weight in kg raised to 0.75. Then we multiply by a factor for life stage and activity: for example 1.6 for a neutered adult or 2 for a puppy over 4 months. Finally we divide by the calories in the kibble, usually printed on the bag.
Feeding tips
- Weigh your dog every month.
- Split the ration into two meals a day.
- Change kibble gradually over seven days.
- Always provide clean water.
- Avoid chocolate, grapes, onion and cooked bones: they are dangerous for dogs.
